We should do it for our taggers, then maybe the message will get through that it is not art, it is costly damage.

RE: Jail time for tagging

I work in a field that deals with the aftermath of these crimes, I understand the cost and the trauma this type of crime creates for a victim. By dealing in a reasonably harsh manner at this time with an offender it may be enough of a deterrent to cause them not to repeat and in most cases escalate their crimes therefore creating a brighter future for both society as a whole and the individual long term.

RE: Jail time for tagging

It's pretty ridiculous. I don't condone graffiti at all, but this seems extreme.

That said, they have to make an example out of somebody and she just happened to be dumb enough to be caught.

RE: Jail time for tagging

I think this is too harsh for this person with no previous record. I would have recommended 3 months community work, ie cleaning tagging. However I feel strongly that we need to have stronger penalties for this crime, as the act should not be underated. I think of a community business and family man in Auckland last year who confronted taggers with a knife and one of the young men in the tussle died. The business man now faces a jail sentence and I think this is less fair.

I also think if people want to draw on walls, public space should be made available as this can look quite "artful".

Jail time for tagging

Cheyene Back, an 18-year-old Australian woman, was sentenced to three months jail yesterday for vandalising a Sydney cafe.

The tag - 30 centimetres high, 50 centimetres long and reading "2shie" - was sprawled on the Hyde Park Cafe on Macquarie Street. It was Back's first offence.

Do you think the sentence was fair?
