Cosmeceuticals. What are they? What do they claim to do? And do they work?

These are some of the questions floating around the MiNDFOOD office at the moment and we'd like to hear what you have to say. Have you ever used a product claiming to be a "cosmeceutical"? Tell us about it...

I take "cosmeceuticals" to include peels, microdermabrasion (which I've had, kinda tickles) and AHAs.

To be honest I think that diet, exercise and reducing stress do more for your skin than these products.

To be completely honest I know nothing about the art of cosmeceuticals, and the word scares me a little... maybe someone can fill me in??

Cosmeceuticals are a fusion of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Rather than merely sitting on top of your skin (like cosmetics do) they have active ingredients in them (such as, Retinoids, AHAs, Botanicals, Vitamins) that penetrate deeply into the skin, acting more like a drug than skincare.

The word does sound scary but it doesn't mean the products necessarily are. The reputable ones are highly effective and can help fight against visible signs of ageing.

I agree - I'm not convinced that any of these super anti-aging products actually do anything. If they worked then we'd see lots of women wandering around looking much younger than their actual age, but I haven't seen any yet. I think moisturisers are good for softening and protecting the skin temporarily, but apart from that the jury is out.
