I've just finished reading The Slap, by Christos Tsiolkas. It starts at a "typical Australian" BBQ, where one guest slaps a naughty child (who is not his own). It then follows each guest's response to the slap, some are outraged, others emphasise with the slapper.
If you read this book, make sure you get a friend to do so as well, as it poses a lot of interesting questions about raising kids and middle class life.
Tsiolkas won a slew of awards for the book, including the Commonwealth Prize.

We are both Early Childhood teachers, and with NZ's upcoming referendum question about a smack being an acceptable way of disciplining children, I look forward to a good discussion about it. I'm reading Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

I'm reading Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. I finished reading The Slap. I thought it was pretty blokey, with loads of seemingly unnecessary sexual references. I wanted more on the family issues and less on the sex. But I found the chapter of the old man very moving. The Slap is worth a read. I also just finished My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Cried my eyes out! I'm reading Q and A by Vikas Swarup, the book Slumdog Millionnaire is based on.

| I just finished "On The Fifth Day" by A.J. Hartley. In summation, an excellent read, mystery novel concerning the mysterious death of a priest, and what it may have been trying to stop him from discovering. A very good read.
