Earlier this year I was retrenched from my job, and unfortunately I was classed as "casual" so didn't receive the same benefits as everyone else.

I ended up getting a better job as a result, but the experience really hit me for six.

Has anyone else ever experienced retrenchment/redundancy? How did you cope?

That's a new word for me 'retrenched' - sounds like a word that couches the truth!

In the past I've been made redundant twice with no payout as I had been working and I can sympathise with what you've been through Ali.  The first time was half expected and I didn't really like the job anyway so I wasn't too bothered, but the second time came completely out of the blue.  The whole company was called into a meeting, one by one we had to got up to this 'panel' of management who told us whether we were staying or going.  It was truly horrible for everyone whether you were disposed of (like me) or kept on.  Those of us who were let go were escorted into the office and watched as we collected our personal items.  I felt like a criminal!

I'm self employed now so that's never going to happen again unless I want to take myself into a quiet room and tell myself that I'm no longer needed in the company.  And if that does happen, my sanity needs to be readdressed.

I guess when you're your own boss, Corelliz, you make the decision when it's time to call it quits. I had no idea our business was shutting down, but I'm sure people higher up knew.

Do you think staff should be aware of imminent changes like this? Some might argue that it could crush staff morale...or perhaps provide a much-needed boost?

Even though I've been on the receiving side of retrenchement, I believe that it is best that staff do not know what problems the company are facing. There would possibly be a worse situation if they did. I'm glad I'm not in a position to ever make a decision like that though.
