The Australian government's productivity commission has issued a draft report for a national paid parental leave scheme.

Have a look at it here: http://www.pc.gov.au/projects/inquiry/parentalsupport/draft/draftreports-media-release

It proposes 18 weeks paid parental leave (shared between mother and father) at the adult min wage of $544 per week. Tax payers will fund the scheme and employers will still have to make superannuation contributions.

What does everyone think?

I think it's still not enough, but it's a start at least. Australia has lagged behind other countries on this issue for too long.

I agree, Cass. I think it's a step in the right direction. I know quite a few people out there who will benefit from this and know how important it is to them. People forget how important those first few months are for mother-baby-father bonding.

see what you don't understand is that employers will be more reluctant to employ women in the workforce if this comes into action.

In last week's health newsletter we asked readers their preferred length of time for paid maternity leave. 79% of you agreed the ideal length of paid maternity leave was a full 1 year.
Australia is one of five developed countries in the world who have not yet legislated for federally funded paid maternity leave, rather offering a one-off payment or ‘Baby Bonus’ of A$5000, leaving the issue of maternity leave to trade unions and, ultimately, employer discretion.
New Zealand caters for 14 weeks of paid maternity leave and a further 12 months of unpaid employment protection. This a far cry from Canada’s 35 weeks of paid parental leave, to be split between both parents, if desired, on top of the 15 weeks initial paid maternity leave.

What action can be taken to advocate for a more comprehensive maternity leave scheme?
